About this coinHistory

The 1983-S Proof cent was the first proof cent struck on copper-plated zinc planchets. Previous proof cents had all been produced in the traditional bronze composition. The shift to zinc for the proof issue marked the end of an era for proof collectors who valued the heft and tonal quality of copper.

San Francisco produced approximately 3.28 million proof sets containing the new-composition cent. Collectors noticed the difference: the zinc proof felt lighter and sounded different when handled. The visual appearance, however, remained similar, with deep mirror fields and frosted devices. The 1983-S Proof is widely available and affordable. Its significance lies in being the first zinc proof cent, a transition point in the proof series that paralleled the circulation change of the previous year.
