About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 4.68 billion cents in 1987. The Iran-Contra affair dominated Washington as Congressional hearings revealed secret arms sales to Iran and illegal funding of Nicaraguan rebels. Oliver North testified before Congress in July, becoming a polarizing national figure. On October 19, the stock market crashed, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling over 22% in a single day.

The 1987 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark. It is common in all grades and circulated heavily during a year of political scandal and financial turmoil.
