Denver produced over 4.92 billion cents in 1990, bearing the "D" mintmark. The coins circulated during the buildup to the Gulf War and the onset of an economic recession that would last into 1991. Nelson Mandela was released from prison in South Africa in February after 27 years, an event watched worldwide.
The 1990-D is common in all grades and presents no challenge for collectors. Its large mintage means that both circulated and mint-state examples are readily available at minimal cost.
