About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint struck over 5.16 billion cents in 1991. The Gulf War began with a devastating air campaign in January and a ground offensive in February that liberated Kuwait in just 100 hours. The Soviet Union dissolved in December, ending 74 years of Communist rule and the Cold War itself. The world had fundamentally changed.

At home, the economy was in recession. The 1991 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is common in all grades. It circulated during one of the most consequential years in modern geopolitics.
