About this coinHistory

The 1992-D Close AM shares the same origin story as its Philadelphia counterpart: a proof-style reverse die was mistakenly paired with a circulation-strike obverse die, this time at the Denver Mint. The Close AM is identified by the nearly touching bases of the "A" and "M" in "AMERICA" on the reverse, a feature normally reserved for proof dies.

The 1992-D Close AM is scarce, though some references suggest it may be slightly more available than the Philadelphia version. Both carry significant premiums. Authentication is recommended. Collectors pursuing the Close AM varieties assemble a small but interesting subset of the Memorial cent series: the 1992 and 1992-D Close AM circulation coins, plus the related Wide AM proof varieties from later years.
