About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint produced over 5.5 billion cents in 2000, the first year of the new millennium. The Y2K computer bug turned out to be a non-event, and the world rang in the year 2000 without the catastrophic systems failures many had feared. The dot-com bubble began to deflate in March when the NASDAQ peaked and started a steep decline. The presidential election in November between George W. Bush and Al Gore ended in a disputed result that would not be resolved for five weeks.

The 2000 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and is common. It circulated during the transition to a new century and a new period of uncertainty. Collectors include it as a standard issue.
