About this coinHistory

Denver's 2000 Massachusetts quarter shares its reverse with the Philadelphia issue: Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s rendering of the Concord Minute Man set against the state outline, with the legend "The Bay State" beneath. The figure echoes Daniel Chester French's 1874 sculpture at the Old North Bridge, the spot where colonial militia exchanged opening fire with British regulars on April 19, 1775. Denver produced 535,184,000 coins, slightly below its Philadelphia counterpart, an output pattern that held through most of the program's middle years as the public's bag-and-roll demand kept both branch mints running hot. Massachusetts ranked sixth in the state lineup, set by the order it had ratified the Constitution in 1788.

Denver strikes on Massachusetts often come up a touch crisper than Philadelphia's, especially on the musket detail and the Minute Man's coat folds. Where Denver tends to lose points is in the obverse field behind Washington's head, which can show contact marks from bag-handling at the originating Mint. PCGS and NGC populations look familiar for a 2000-D quarter: heavy through MS66, a clear step down at MS67, and a real scarcity at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). Known varieties are minor; some die-deterioration doubling shows on later-state strikes, but nothing of Cherrypickers' significance has gained traction for this date.

The 2000-D Massachusetts fits cleanly as the Denver half of a year-2 set and continues to circulate in pocket change two and a half decades later. Roll searchers still cherrypick it for premium strikes, particularly examples with sharp hat-feathers and clean Washington cheeks, and the date remains one of the more affordable MS67 builds in a high-grade State Quarter registry run. Mint-set holders that preserved 2000-D coins at issue continue to supply the slabbed Mint State (MS65 and higher uncirculated) market with reasonable regularity.
