About this coinHistory

Denver's 2001 New York quarter, the eleventh release overall and the opening 2001 design, shares Alfred Maletsky's reverse with its Philadelphia counterpart: a state outline with the Statue of Liberty rising at center, a line tracing the Erie Canal through the state, and eleven stars marking New York as the eleventh state to ratify the Constitution. "Gateway to Freedom" curves above the design. The Empire State's selection used Liberty's silhouette, recognizable worldwide, to anchor an otherwise map-heavy field. Denver produced 619,640,000 pieces, trailing Philadelphia by about 36 million and tracking the typical 2001 P-over-D pattern for opening-year-3 issues. New York's place in the rollout sequence matched its rank as the eleventh state, the same numbering encoded on the reverse itself.

Denver strikes on New York usually come up well-defined. The Statue of Liberty's torch and radiate crown tend to render cleanly on early-die-state coins, with the small stars and the fine Erie Canal line showing as the first die-fill points on late-die-state strikes. Washington's cheek and the field behind the head remain the obverse weak points for grading; bag-handling at Denver scatters small marks across these areas and caps many candidates at MS66. PCGS and NGC populations are deep at MS66, narrower at MS67, and meaningfully scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties have anchored to the issue, though shallow die cracks across the lower reverse appear on cherrypicked rolls.

The 2001-D New York opens the year-3 Denver lineup and benefits from Liberty's universal name recognition, which gives the coin display appeal beyond the registry-set audience. Roll searchers still pull premium strikes for full-detail gems, and MS67 Denver examples remain available for collectors completing a top-grade program run on a working budget. The design pairs naturally with later Liberty-themed pieces in topical sets. For wider context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
