About this coinHistory

The 2002-S Louisiana Silver Proof Quarter honors the eighteenth state admitted to the Union, and its reverse threads three distinct Louisiana stories into one composition: a brown pelican in flight, a trumpet with musical notes, and the outline of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase territory stretching across the upper field. The brown pelican is the state bird and has served as a Louisiana symbol since colonial times. The trumpet stands in for New Orleans and the birth of jazz, with notes trailing through the design. The Purchase outline maps the roughly 828,000 square miles Thomas Jefferson bought from France for fifteen million dollars, a transaction that doubled the size of the United States. Silver proofs bring the pelican's feather detail, the trumpet's valve casings, and the territorial boundary into frosted relief clad proofs cannot reach.

San Francisco produced 892,229 silver proofs of the Louisiana quarter, the standard mintage across every 2002 silver proof state issue, and authentication starts with composition. The coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, the silver proof standard the Mint maintained from 1992 through 2018 before switching to 99.9% silver in 2019. Weight is the single most efficient diagnostic at 6.25 grams against 5.67 grams for clad proofs, a difference modern jeweler's scales resolve immediately. Diameter remains 24.3mm against the clad version, so calipers will not separate the two formats. Surfaces should read silvery-white and reflective rather than the warmer copper-nickel tone, with squared rims from proof striking pressure, deeply mirrored fields, and frosted devices on Cameo and Deep Cameo grades. With three subjects competing for attention on one reverse, the contrast windows are smaller than on most state designs, which is why DCAM examples with full pelican, trumpet, and territorial frost remain the format collectors specifically hunt.
