About this coinHistory

The 2002-S Mississippi Silver Proof Quarter honors the twentieth state admitted to the Union, and its reverse is the quietest composition in the 2002 calendar: two magnolia blossoms with leaves arranged across the field beneath a curving "The Magnolia State" inscription. Mississippi adopted the magnolia as the official state flower in 1952 and the official state tree in 1938, and the cream-white blossom with its broad leaves has long served as the state's botanical signature. Choosing two flowers as the sole reverse subjects gave the design a contemplative, almost still-life quality unusual in a series more often packed with landmarks and historical references. Silver proofs bring the petal curvature, the central stamen clusters, and the leaf veining into frosted detail clad proofs cannot quite reach, and the broad open blossom faces become the largest single contrast windows on any 2002 issue.

San Francisco produced 892,229 silver proofs of the Mississippi quarter, the standard mintage across every 2002 silver proof state issue, and authentication starts with composition. The coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, the silver proof standard the Mint maintained from 1992 through 2018 before switching to 99.9% silver in 2019. Weight is the single most efficient diagnostic at 6.25 grams against 5.67 grams for clad proofs, a difference any modern jeweler's scale resolves on the first reading. Diameter is unchanged at 24.3mm against the clad version, so calipers alone will not separate the two formats. Surfaces should read silvery-white and reflective rather than the warmer copper-nickel tone, with squared rims from proof striking pressure, deeply mirrored fields, and frosted devices on Cameo and Deep Cameo grades. The wide petal faces are where this design lives or dies in DCAM grade, which is why high-grade examples with full frost across both blossoms remain the format collectors most actively chase for display sets.
