2004-P Florida

Philadelphia's 2004 Florida quarter, the program's twenty-seventh issue and the second 2004 release, carries T. James Ferrell's busy reverse: a 16th-century Spanish galleon under sail at left, a Space Shuttle ascending at right, and two palm trees framing the center band, with "Gateway to Discovery" arcing along the lower rim. Florida joined the Union in 1845 as the twenty-seventh state, and the coin's March 29 release set up the program's broad time-jump motif: a single design carrying the state's history from Ponce de Leon's 1513 landing through the modern Kennedy Space Center launches. Philadelphia struck 240,200,000 pieces, the lower side of the 2004-P pair. The design's element count is high for a quarter reverse, and Ferrell handled the visual load by varying field depth across the three subjects rather than crowding them into a single registration plane.

Strikes on Philadelphia Floridas come up cleanly on early-die-state coins; the galleon's rigging and the shuttle's solid rocket boosters are the first places to lose definition as dies wear. Palm-frond detail at the design's lower corners holds up better than the upper-element fine work because those areas sit lower in the field. Washington's cheek and the field behind the head stay the obverse weak points for grading, and 2004-P bag handling scatters small marks across these areas and caps many candidates at MS66. PCGS and NGC populations run deep at MS66, narrower at MS67, and scarce at MS68 in the population reports kept by the two major third-party grading services (TPGs). No FS-listed varieties have anchored to the issue; light reverse die cracks across the shuttle's exhaust plume have been reported on cherrypicked rolls without carrying premium attribution.

The 2004-P Florida sits in the year-6 Philadelphia lineup with display appeal across two collector audiences (colonial-history and space-program topical collectors) that few other Statehood designs can claim. Roll searchers continue to pull premium strikes for full-detail gems, and MS67 examples remain available for collectors completing a top-grade run on a working budget.
