About this coinHistory

The 2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf Low, attributed FS-5902 by the Cherrypickers' Guide and recognized by PCGS and NGC, ranks among the most celebrated error varieties of the entire 50 State Quarters program. The standard 2004-D Wisconsin carries Alfred Maletsky's agricultural reverse: a cow head, a cheese wheel, and an ear of corn under "America's Dairyland" with "Forward" beneath the cheese. On the Extra Leaf Low variety, an additional raised leaf appears on the corn ear, positioned below the canonical lower leaf and angling downward to the right. The variety surfaced in Tucson, Arizona in late 2004 / early 2005 when collectors pulled examples from circulation, and the discovery touched off national media coverage that drew new attention to the State Quarters program. Most numismatic specialists attribute the variety to a deliberate die alteration at the Denver Mint rather than a die-state error, though the U.S. Mint never confirmed an official origin. Both Extra Leaf varieties were struck only on Denver dies, and survivor counts run in the hundreds to low thousands across all grades for each variety.

Authentication starts at the corn ear under 10x magnification: a genuine Extra Leaf Low shows a clearly raised extra leaf positioned below the canonical lower leaf, angling downward and to the right, with sharp engraved edges that match the surrounding design's relief profile rather than appearing as a scratch or post-mint impression. Compare the candidate directly against PCGS photographic plates for FS-5902 to confirm the leaf's position, angle, and length match the attribution standard. Critically, the Extra Leaf varieties exist only on 2004-D coins; no Philadelphia or proof equivalents have been documented, so any "Extra Leaf" candidate bearing a P mintmark, an S mintmark, or proof surfaces should be rejected immediately. Cleaned, polished, or surface-altered examples have appeared on the secondary market; raw coins should be evaluated for original mint surfaces before any premium is paid. PCGS and NGC both certify the variety with the FS-5902 attribution; population reports concentrate in the AU and lower MS grades, with mid-grade and higher-MS examples meaningfully scarce.

The 2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf Low carries the strongest cherry-pick story of the Statehood program and rewards careful authentication with a substantial premium over the standard 2004-D Wisconsin. Roll searchers continue to pull occasional examples from circulation more than two decades after the discovery, though the population has largely been worked over. Mid-grade certified examples remain attainable for collectors completing a Wisconsin specialty set alongside the Extra Leaf High and the standard issue.
