About this coinHistory

The 2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf High, attributed FS-5901 by the Cherrypickers' Guide and recognized by both PCGS and NGC, sits alongside its Extra Leaf Low sibling as one of the most celebrated error varieties of the 50 State Quarters program. The standard 2004-D Wisconsin carries Alfred Maletsky's reverse with a cow head, a cheese wheel, and an ear of corn under "America's Dairyland" with "Forward" beneath the cheese. On the Extra Leaf High variety, an additional raised leaf appears on the corn ear, positioned above and to the right of the canonical upper leaf and angling upward. The variety came to light in late 2004 / early 2005 when Tucson, Arizona collectors began pulling examples from circulation, and the discovery generated national media coverage that brought fresh attention to the State Quarters program. Most numismatic specialists describe the variety as a deliberate die alteration at the Denver Mint (most likely an intentional scratch or modification by a worker) rather than a routine die-state error, though the U.S. Mint declined to confirm an official origin. Both Extra Leaf varieties were struck only on Denver dies, and surviving populations run in the hundreds to low thousands across all grades.

Authentication starts at the corn ear under 10x magnification: a genuine Extra Leaf High shows a clearly raised extra leaf positioned above and to the right of the canonical upper leaf, angling upward, with sharp engraved edges that match the surrounding design's relief profile rather than appearing as an after-strike scratch or surface impression. Compare the candidate directly against PCGS photographic plates for FS-5901 to confirm the leaf's position, angle, and length conform to the attribution standard; the High and Low varieties each have distinct positioning, and a leaf in the wrong location disqualifies the candidate. Critically, the Extra Leaf varieties exist only on 2004-D coins; no Philadelphia or proof equivalents have been documented, so any "Extra Leaf" candidate showing a P mintmark, an S mintmark, or proof surfaces should be rejected immediately. PCGS and NGC both certify the variety with FS-5901 attribution; populations concentrate in AU and lower MS grades, with higher-MS examples meaningfully scarce.

The 2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf High carries one of the strongest discovery-story premiums in the modern series and rewards close authentication with a meaningful price step above the standard 2004-D Wisconsin. Roll searchers continue to pull occasional examples from circulation more than two decades after the original 2005 discovery, though most of the population has been worked over by collectors. Mid-grade certified examples remain attainable for collectors building a Wisconsin specialty set alongside the Extra Leaf Low and the standard 2004-D issue. For wider context, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
