. The 2005-D Kansas Satin Finish quarter is the Denver companion to the Philadelphia satin Kansas issue, both packaged together in the 2005 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set, the first year of a new satin format that replaced the bright cartwheel finish in use since 1959. Norman Nemeth's reverse places the American bison alongside a cluster of native sunflowers, pairing the state animal and the state flower in a single foreground composition. The image draws directly on Kansas's prairie identity, and the satin surface lets Nemeth's modeling of the bison's coat read clearly without the optical noise of a brilliant business strike.
Authentication starts with the satin texture. Specially treated dies impart a uniform matte sheen across all relief and field surfaces, distinct from the deep mirrored fields of a true San Francisco proof and from the bright cartwheel luster of a circulation strike. Composition is the standard clad sandwich: 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters. The D mintmark sits to the right of Washington's queue on the obverse. Grading services use SP or SMS designations for these issues, and an unopened Mint Set holder provides the cleanest authentication path since satin coins were never released into circulation.
Denver struck 1,160,000 satin Kansas quarters for the 2005 set, matching the Philadelphia figure and the broader satin mintage for the year. The Annual Mint Set sold to collectors at a premium over face value, and the healthy base number is offset by attrition from opened sets and inconsistent storage, which keeps high-grade SP-69 and SP-70 examples genuinely scarce on the certified market. The Kansas design has also drawn extra attention because the parallel circulation issue produced the well-known "In God We Rust" filled-die error, but no such filled-die anomaly has been confirmed on satin-finish dies, which were prepared and maintained more carefully than business-strike working dies.
