Norman Nemeth's reverse places the American bison alongside a cluster of native sunflowers, pairing the state animal and the state flower in a single foreground composition. The image draws directly on Kansas's prairie identity, and the satin surface lets Nemeth's modeling of the bison's coat read clearly without the optical noise of a brilliant business strike.

Authentication starts with the satin texture. Specially treated dies impart a uniform matte sheen across all relief and field surfaces, distinct from the deep mirrored fields of a true San Francisco proof and from the bright cartwheel luster of a circulation strike. Composition is the standard clad sandwich: 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters. The D mintmark sits to the right of Washington's queue on the obverse. Grading services use SP or SMS designations for these issues, and an unopened Mint Set holder provides the cleanest authentication path since satin coins were never released into circulation.
