About this coinHistory

. The 2005-D Minnesota Satin Finish quarter is the Denver counterpart to the Philadelphia satin issue and shares the same Charles Vickers reverse design featuring the state outline, a Common Loon on a forested lake, and two anglers fishing from a boat. Both mint marks were packaged together in the 2005 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set, the first year the Mint replaced the long-running brilliant uncirculated finish, in use since 1959, with a soft satin texture. The format would run only through 2010, so the 2005 satin issues are pulled from the very first year of a limited six-year experiment in collector-set finishes.

The 2005-D Minnesota satin authenticates through its surface alone. Dies prepared for the satin format produce a uniform matte sheen across Washington's portrait, the fields, and the Minnesota landscape; that look is distinct from both the deep mirrored fields of a San Francisco proof and the broad cartwheel luster of a Denver circulation strike. Planchet specifications match circulation: 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters. The D mintmark sits to the right of Washington's queue. Grading services attribute these as SP (Specimen) or SMS, and the original Mint Set packaging serves as primary certification because no satin Minnesota piece was ever released into circulation.

Denver's satin Minnesota mintage stands at 1,160,000, identical to every other 2005 satin issue. Two die varieties, the Extra Tree pieces parallel to the circulation Minnesota varieties, also exist within the Denver satin production and are catalogued separately, making the satin Minnesota one of the few 2005 issues with attributable die variants. Sets sold to collectors at a premium over face value, and while the raw output sounds generous compared to a typical proof figure, attrition from opened sets has kept high-grade SP-69 and SP-70 examples genuinely scarce on the certified market.
