About this coinHistory

. The 2005-P Kansas Satin Finish quarter is part of the inaugural satin format that replaced the long-running brilliant finish in the U.S. Mint's Annual Uncirculated Set in 2005. Norman Nemeth's reverse pairs the American bison with native sunflowers, the state animal and state flower side by side, in a composition that reads instantly even at coin scale. Kansas is the only 2005 reverse with two distinct subject areas held in a single foreground field, and the satin treatment helps both elements sit comfortably together: the bison's coat texture and the sunflower petals show their engraving without the optical glare of a brilliant strike.

Authentication centers on surface texture. Dies specially treated for satin striking produce a uniform matte sheen across Washington's portrait and the Kansas reverse, distinguishable from the mirrored fields of a true San Francisco proof and from the cartwheel luster of a Philadelphia or Denver business strike. The planchet is the standard cupronickel-clad composition, 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters, and the P mintmark confirms Philadelphia origin. No S satin issue exists, because San Francisco struck only mirror proofs in 2005. Since satin coins never circulated, an authentic example should show no contact marks or wear; PCGS and NGC use SP or SMS designations, and an unopened Mint Set holder is itself strong provenance.

Philadelphia's satin Kansas mintage stands at 1,160,000, the standard figure for the 2005 set. The number is generous compared to a typical proof issue, but many sets have been opened over the years and the supply of clean, top-grade certified examples is much thinner than the raw production suggests. The matte surface is also more prone to revealing fingerprints than either a brilliant uncirculated coin or a mirrored proof, which adds friction to building a clean Philadelphia satin example two decades after release.
