. The 2005-P Minnesota Satin Finish quarter sits among the most-collected pieces of the inaugural Uncirculated Mint Set satin format. After 46 years of bright cartwheel sets, the Mint shifted to a matte satin treatment in 2005, and Minnesota, released alongside California, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia, was issued in both P and D mint marks inside the new packaging. Charles Vickers's reverse stages a Minnesota tableau: a state outline anchors the design while a Common Loon swims on a tree-lined lake and two anglers fish from a boat in the foreground. Minnesota's "Land of 10,000 Lakes" theme reads instantly, and the satin treatment lets the engraver's detailing in the pines and shoreline foliage show without the optical noise of a brilliant strike.
Satin authentication centers on surface texture. The dies, specially treated to impart a soft uniform sheen, leave fields that are neither mirrored like a true San Francisco proof nor cartwheeled like a circulation strike, the look is dry, even, and slightly cloth-like under good light. Composition is unchanged from circulation pieces: 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters. The P mintmark to the right of Washington's queue confirms Philadelphia origin; no S satin issues exist, because San Francisco struck only mirror proofs that year. Because these coins never reached circulation, surfaces should be free of contact marks; PCGS and NGC attribute them SP or SMS, and an unopened Annual Mint Set provides clean provenance.
Philadelphia struck 1,160,000 satin Minnesota quarters for the 2005 set. The figure is generous, but it also means the satin Minnesota piece is a useful platform for studying the Extra Tree die varieties that carry over from circulation into the satin dies.
