About this coinHistory

2026-02-13, San Francisco struck 1,069,679 California silver proofs in 2005 for the year's Silver Proof Set, the collector-tier companion to the clad proof. Don Everhart's reverse pairs naturalist John Muir, standing in the foreground, with the granite face of Yosemite Valley's Half Dome rising behind him and a California condor sweeping across the open sky above. The inscriptions "Yosemite Valley" and "John Muir" anchor the program's most explicit naming of both a person and a landform on a single reverse. On a 90% silver planchet, the granite striations of Half Dome and the feather detail along the condor's wings gain a precision the copper-nickel clad cannot match, the white metal lending the entire alpine scene a luminous, almost glacial brightness.

Authenticating a 2005-S California Silver Proof begins at the scale. A genuine silver example weighs 6.25 grams against the 5.67-gram clad proof, and that 0.58-gram differential is the single most efficient diagnostic in the collector's toolkit. The 90% silver, 10% copper composition produces a silvery-white reflective surface noticeably brighter than the slightly grayer clad cast, and viewing the 24.3mm edge straight on reveals a solid silver color rather than the copper-cored sandwich stripe of clad coinage. Squared, sharp rims and heavily frosted Cameo or Deep Cameo devices set against deeply mirrored fields complete the visual signature. Examine Muir's beard, the granite face of Half Dome, and the condor's wingtips under angled light for the heavy frost contrast that defines a properly struck silver proof.

None of the 2005 California silver proofs entered circulation; all were distributed through U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set packaging, and survival rates remain extremely high in pristine grades. Modern market value reflects both the silver bullion content and the proof finish, with Deep Cameo and PR70 examples carrying the strongest premiums. The Muir-and-condor pairing also gives the issue strong topical appeal across western-state and conservation-themed collections.
