About this coinHistory

2026-03-18, San Francisco struck 1,069,679 Oregon silver proofs in 2005 for the year's Silver Proof Set, the collector-tier companion to the clad proof. Donna Weaver's reverse frames Crater Lake from its eastern rim, with the calm caldera water filling the middle distance, Wizard Island rising as a forested cone in the lake's western half, and the encircling rim ridgeline carrying the eye around the design. The inscription "Crater Lake" anchors the scene. On a 90% silver planchet, the lake's water plane and the cinder-cone texture of Wizard Island both gain a depth the copper-nickel clad strike cannot match, the bright white metal lending the entire caldera a glassy, mirror-bottom reflectivity that suits the subject matter unusually well.

Authenticating a 2005-S Oregon Silver Proof rests primarily on weight: a genuine silver proof weighs 6.25 grams against the 5.67 grams of its clad counterpart, and that 0.58-gram differential is the single most efficient diagnostic in the collector's toolkit. The 90% silver, 10% copper composition produces a bright, silvery-white reflective surface noticeably brighter than the slightly grayer clad finish, and the edge, viewed straight on at the 24.3mm diameter, shows a solid silver color rather than the copper-cored sandwich stripe. Squared, sharp rims and heavily frosted Cameo or Deep Cameo devices floating against mirror-black fields complete the visual signature. Examine Wizard Island's tree line and the caldera-rim ridge under angled light for the deep frost contrast that defines a properly struck silver proof.

The Oregon silver proof was sold exclusively through the U.S. Mint's 2005 Silver Proof Set, never released into circulation. Survival rates remain extremely high, these coins live in original government packaging or third-party holders rather than in pocket change. The premium today reflects both the silver bullion content and the proof preparation, with Deep Cameo examples drawing the strongest collector interest. National-park topical sets pair Oregon with the year's California issue for an unusually strong design year on the silver tier.
