About this coinHistory

The 2006-S Nebraska clad proof quarter renders the westward migration in cameo: a covered wagon crossing the prairie toward Chimney Rock, the iconic sandstone spire rising on the horizon as it did for nearly half a million emigrants who passed by it on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Charles Vickers designed the reverse around that landmark for a state that joined the Union in 1867 and chose its most recognizable trail-era silhouette over agricultural imagery. In proof format the wagon's canvas catches frosted highlights against mirrored sky, and Chimney Rock itself appears as a delicate frosted column against the deep reflective field. The inscription "Chimney Rock" needs no further explanation; for anyone who has driven Highway 92 in the Nebraska Panhandle, the spire still looks much as it did when the wagons passed.

San Francisco struck 2,882,428 of these clad proofs for the 2006 Proof Set, matching the standard run-length for that year's five State Quarter proofs. Authentication begins with the watery, mirrored fields produced by polished dies striking polished planchets, then squared rims from the close-collar proof press, which contrast with the slightly rounded rims of business strikes. Under a 10x loupe, parallel die-polish lines should run in consistent directions across the fields, and any hairline scratches running in scattered orientations indicate cleaning rather than original surfaces. True proofs lack the radial flow lines that betray prooflike business strikes, which were single-struck rather than double-struck. The cupronickel-clad alloy keeps the specifications at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with a copper core showing as a reddish line along the reeded edge. Cameo and Deep Cameo grades from PCGS or NGC drive significant premiums, especially DCAM examples where the contrast between frosted devices and mirrored fields reaches maximum intensity.

For the broader context of how the proof program tracked alongside business-strike issues across the decade-long State Quarter run, and where Nebraska fits within the 2006 release calendar, see the 50 State Quarters series history.
