The 2006-S Nevada clad proof quarter delivers the Silver State's wild mustangs as San Francisco intended them to be seen: galloping across mirrored fields so deep they read almost black, frosted manes and flanks lifting against a Sierra Nevada backdrop rendered in matched cameo relief. Don Everhart's reverse composition packed three horses, mountains, and sagebrush into the available canvas, and the proof format gives that density room to breathe by separating every element through textural contrast rather than crowding. Nevada became the 36th state in 1864, admitted mid-Civil War in part because the Comstock Lode's silver bullion mattered to Union finances, and the inscription "The Silver State" carries that history directly onto the coin. The proof striking, with its squared rims and watery fields, was the format collectors reached for when they wanted the design at its sharpest.
San Francisco struck 2,882,428 of these clad proofs across the 2006 Proof Set program, a typical mid-decade figure for State Quarter proofs. Authentication starts with the mirrored fields. Genuine proofs show watery, hall-of-mirrors reflectivity from polished dies striking polished planchets under elevated tonnage, while prooflike business strikes show radial flow lines running from the center outward, betraying their single-strike origin. The rims are squared and sharp from a close collar, not rounded. Under a 10x loupe, fine die-polish lines run in consistent parallel patterns across the fields, distinct from later cleaning hairlines which scatter in random directions. The cupronickel-clad specification holds at 5.67 grams and 24.3 millimeters, with the copper core visible as a thin reddish line on the edge. Cameo and Deep Cameo designations from PCGS or NGC carry meaningful premiums on this issue, with DCAM examples bringing multiples of standard proof prices.
