2012-P Acadia

The 2012-P Acadia is the third release of the year and gave the ATB program its first Maine entry, dedicating the design to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Barbara Fox's reverse, sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on its granite headland, the small white structure perched above the working harbor that has guided coastal traffic into Blue Hill Bay since 1858. Philadelphia struck 24,800,000 pieces, in line with the broader 2012 P-mint pattern of low-to-mid-20-million orders, well below the 2011 average and roughly half the typical 2010 figures.

Strike quality on the issue focuses on the lighthouse tower and the granite outcrop beneath it. Look for clean separation between the keeper's quarters and the tower itself, and for definition in the rock striations along the headland: where dies were worn or pressings were rushed, these elements blur first. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel outer layers over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) is identical to standard Washington Quarter clads since 1965, so authentication is essentially a non-issue and the certified market runs through PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs. Roll hunters still recover MS65 examples from original P-mint rolls, particularly along the East Coast where 2012 Philadelphia distribution was heaviest.

This is a Regular-classification issue with the same structural condition-rarity pattern as the other 2012 dates. The 24.8 million mintage was small for an ATB Philadelphia release, and population reports show the issue thinning rapidly above MS66. Collectors building the circulation run typically buy the date raw or in MS66 holders and reserve premium spend for MS67 and the small MS68 population. The lighthouse imagery has also given the issue some crossover appeal among collectors who chase U.S. coins depicting working maritime structures.
