About this coinHistory

The 2012-P Denali closed the 2012 ATB year and gave Alaska its first appearance on a circulating U.S. coin. Susan Gamble's reverse, sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts a Dall sheep ram in the foreground with the south face of Denali rising behind, the tallest peak in North America at 20,310 feet. The issue carries the park's pre-2015 name on its reverse legend, several years before the federal renaming from Mount McKinley that aligned the official designation with the indigenous Athabaskan name. Philadelphia struck 33,600,000 pieces, the second-highest 2012 P-mint figure after Hawai'i Volcanoes and a notable step up from the year's lower designs.

Strike quality concentrates on the Dall sheep's curling horn and the snow-and-ice texture on the mountain's south face. Look for definition in the spiraling horn ridges and the layered cliff striations on the peak: where dies were used into late state these elements soften first and the design loses the depth-of-field effect Gamble built into the composition. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel outer layers over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams) is the standard since 1965, so counterfeit risk is essentially nil and the certified market runs through PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs. Roll hunters still pull MS65 examples from original P-mint rolls.

This is a Regular-classification issue that occupies a middle position in the 2012 year by both mintage and condition availability. The 33.6 million Philadelphia figure produces a more comfortable MS67 population than El Yunque or Acadia carry, while still sitting well below the 46.2 million Hawai'i Volcanoes. Collectors building the circulation run typically find the issue in MS66 slabs at modest cost and pay graduated premiums into MS67 and MS68. The Dall sheep imagery has also given the issue a small specialist following among collectors who chase U.S. coins depicting native North American wildlife.
