About this coinHistory

The 2012-P Hawai'i Volcanoes is the structural outlier of the 2012 ATB year. Philadelphia struck 46,200,000 pieces, nearly double the average P-mint figure for the four other 2012 designs and the highest single-design ATB mintage at either facility that year. The reverse, designed by Charles Vickers and sculpted by Charles Vickers, shows an erupting lava flow from the Pu'u 'O'o vent on Kilauea, the eruption that began in 1983 and continued through the issue's design window. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, protects active volcanic terrain on the Big Island including Kilauea and Mauna Loa.

Strike quality concentrates on the lava-flow texture and the steam plume above the vent, both of which require well-maintained dies to render cleanly. Late-die-state examples flatten the steam definition and soften the molten-rock surface variation that makes the design read in hand. Look at the highest points of the lava-flow ridge for the first signs of friction wear if you are grading raw coins from rolls. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams) is identical to every quarter struck since 1965, so authentication concerns are negligible and the certified market runs through PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC slabs. Roll hunters working original P-mint rolls can still recover MS66 examples from this issue with reasonable success.

The 46.2 million mintage means this is the most available 2012 P-mint date through the entire grade range. Population reports at MS67 sit comfortably above the four other 2012 designs, and even MS68 examples come to market with reasonable frequency. As a result the issue trades as a true common date through high Mint State, and serious premium pricing only kicks in at MS68+ with the deep cameo strike examples. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
