The 2017-S Ellis Island, Enhanced Uncirculated is one of two ATB quarters issued in that finish for the 225th-anniversary Enhanced Uncirculated Coin Set, the U.S. Mint's special 2017 product marking the institution's founding by Congress on April 2, 1792 under the Coinage Act. The Mint sold 1,078,981 sets, so each Enhanced Uncirculated piece in the package matches that figure as its print run. Barbara Fox's reverse, sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, renders an immigrant family carrying their belongings up from the dock with the central tower of Ellis Island's Main Building rising behind them, the same composition struck in standard finish for the year's P, D, and S Clad Proof issues but rendered here with the laser-etched device frosting that defines the Enhanced Uncirculated treatment. Ellis Island itself processed over twelve million immigrants between 1892 and 1954 and gave the program its most pointed immigration narrative.

Authentication on the issue starts with the S mintmark above Washington's head and the laser-etched device texture that separates Enhanced Uncirculated from every other 2017 production. The finish is not a proof, despite the catalog label: surfaces are not mirrored, and the devices show a fine, evenly distributed laser frost that reads as partial cameo under direct light rather than the deep, raised frost of traditional die-prepared proof devices. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC both explicitly label slabs "Enhanced Uncirculated" or "Enhanced UNC" rather than the proof designation, which preserves the distinction at resale. Under magnification, the laser etching shows a regular micro-texture across the family figures, the suitcases, and the building's tower brickwork, where traditional cameo frost would show a more random metallurgical surface. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches every Washington quarter struck since 1965.

As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue whose collecting value comes from finish and one-time-set status rather than absolute scarcity. The 1.078M print figure is comparable to the year's clad and silver proofs, but the Enhanced Uncirculated finish was a one-off across the ATB program: only Ellis Island and George Rogers Clark received the treatment in 2017, and no other year of the series used it.
