Chris Costello's reverse depicts a canoeist paddling on one of the spring-fed waterways protected at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in southern Missouri, with a cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) visible on a rock at the water's edge and a forested bluff rising behind. The Riverways was the first national park unit to protect a riverway, established in 1964 across roughly 134 river miles on the Current and Jacks Fork. The issue is the fourth of five 2017 releases and depicts a less commonly seen species on coinage; cottonmouth identification on the reverse is per U.S. Mint design briefings and NPS Ozark fauna documentation.

Proof finish on the issue is the standard San Francisco style: mirrored fields struck from polished planchets against dies frosted in chemical baths before each press run.
