San Francisco struck 1,078,981 pieces of the 2017-S Ozark clad proof, the figure matching the U.S. Mint Clad Proof Set sales total because the five 2017 quarters shipped as a packaged product. Chris Costello's reverse depicts a canoeist paddling on one of the spring-fed waterways protected at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in southern Missouri, with a cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) visible on a rock at the water's edge and a forested bluff rising behind. The Riverways was the first national park unit to protect a riverway, established in 1964 across roughly 134 river miles on the Current and Jacks Fork. The issue is the fourth of five 2017 releases and depicts a less commonly seen species on coinage; cottonmouth identification on the reverse is per U.S. Mint design briefings and NPS Ozark fauna documentation.
Proof finish on the issue is the standard San Francisco style: mirrored fields struck from polished planchets against dies frosted in chemical baths before each press run. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the contrast designations PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, apply on top of the numeric grade, with DCAM the default outcome rather than an upgrade tier. Grade distribution clusters at PR69-DCAM and PR70-DCAM with population counts in the thousands at the top. The diagnostic strike areas are the canoeist figure, the snake's body texture on the rock at left, and the layered foliage of the bluff. The triple-element composition puts unusual pressure on strike quality; full press pressure is required to render all three subjects distinctly. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches every Washington quarter struck since 1965, so counterfeit risk is essentially nil.
The issue trades in the lower price band typical of modern clad proofs and routes through year-set or design-set assembly. A raw certified PR69-DCAM example moves for a small premium over the cost of breaking up a sealed 2017 Clad Proof Set, and PR70-DCAM examples in NGC or PCGS holders sit at a modestly higher tier. The cottonmouth depiction makes the issue distinctive among ATB reverses, since the snake is the only venomous species rendered across the 56-design run, and Missouri state and reptile-topical collectors treat the issue as a baseline acquisition. The 1.08 million print run reflects the steady proof-set sales decline through the mid-decade.
