About this coinHistory

Cumberland Island National Seashore on the Georgia coast took the fourth slot in the 2018 ATB year, shifting the water-themed run from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic barrier islands. Philadelphia struck 117,600,000 pieces for the design, comfortably inside the 110-140M band that characterized the year's P-mint production. Donna Weaver built her reverse around a wild horse running along a dune ridge, drawing on Cumberland's most photographed wildlife feature: the feral horse herd that has lived on the island since the colonial era. The galloping pose puts the horse's mane and tail in motion against the dune line, which gives the design more kinetic energy than the static landscapes that dominated earlier ATB years.

Strike characteristics on the issue sort at the horse's mane, the dune grass, and the horse's legs in the running pose. MS66 examples show full mane texture and at least three visible leg positions, while MS67 coins add crisp definition along the dune grass at the top of the ridge. Philadelphia dies during the 2018 cycle held up adequately, but late-state coins flatten the mane and lose individual blades of dune grass, which is the most reliable cherry-picking signal for separating MS65 from MS66 on raw examples. The clad composition is standard at 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams on a 24.26 mm reeded planchet. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC handle the registry-grade market, with raw coins moving at face-plus levels through dealer inventories.

The 2018-P Cumberland Island is a Regular classification entry and a common date through MS66, with premiums concentrated at MS67 and condition-rarity behavior emerging at MS68. Population reports show the issue widely available at MS66 and thinning at MS67, where a few hundred certified examples cover the full submission base. Registry collectors building the 56-coin clad run typically buy the P and D 2018 Cumberland Island as a paired tier and pay close to the same premium for each.
