About this coinHistory

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior provided the second 2018 ATB design and the lowest Philadelphia mintage of the year at 115,200,000 pieces. The site protects 21 islands in northern Wisconsin, and Patricia Lucas-Morris built her reverse around the sea caves at Devil's Island with a kayaker paddling through the arch. The composition is busier than the Pictured Rocks design that preceded it: rock surfaces with directional water erosion, an open water arch, and a small figure in the foreground all share real estate on a 24.26 mm planchet. That density of relief detail is the engraving challenge collectors weigh when grading the issue, since soft strike can blur the rock-water boundary first.

Production characteristics on the 2018-P cluster around the cave's arch and the kayak figure. MS66 examples typically show readable cave-wall texture and a defined paddle stroke, while MS67 examples add full water-line detail along the kayak hull. Philadelphia dies for the issue showed the standard 2018-era life span, with late-state coins losing definition in the cave-wall striations before any other detail. The clad composition runs 75% copper-nickel over copper at 5.67 grams, standard for ATB circulation strikes. Authentication does not enter the picture at the date level; clad quarters do not attract counterfeiters, and the slabbed market through PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC handles all grade-premium activity for set builders.

The 2018-P Apostle Islands is a Regular classification entry, common in raw form and through MS66 at the major graders. Population reports thin at MS67 where the issue functions as a condition rarity for registry buyers, and MS68 examples are scarce enough to draw real money when they do come to market. Set collectors pricing the 2018 lakeshore tier typically treat the four water-themed Philadelphia issues from the year as a group, since their availability curves and price levels track within a narrow band. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
