About this coinHistory

Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota took the third slot in the 2018 ATB year, sitting between the two lakeshore designs that frame the water-themed run. Philadelphia struck 128,400,000 quarters for the design, a mid-range figure for the late-series period when Federal Reserve orders had settled into the 110-200M band by mint. Patricia Lucas-Morris built her reverse around a rock formation with a rope swing, with figures enjoying the lake below; the design is unusual within the ATB program for showing recreational use of the site rather than only landscape or wildlife, which gives the engraving a busier composition than most peers from the year. The park honors the fur-trade era voyageurs who paddled the canoe routes between Lake Superior and Hudson Bay.

Strike characteristics on the issue sort at the rope swing and the small human figures. The rope itself is a thin raised line that disappears first on weak strikes, and an MS66 example needs a continuous rope from the branch to the figure for the grade to hold. Philadelphia dies during the 2018 run produced full strikes through the early and middle die states; late-state coins lose definition in the foliage of the tree behind the swing, and that softening separates MS65 from MS66 at PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service. The clad composition is the standard ATB recipe at 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams on a 24.26 mm planchet with reeded edge. Authentication is not a date-level concern; clad quarters do not return enough premium to justify counterfeiting.

The 2018-P Voyageurs is a Regular classification entry, available raw and through MS66 at modest premiums and turning into a condition rarity at MS68. Registry buyers chasing the entire 56-coin clad run pair the P and D 2018 Voyageurs as a single tier within the set and pay close to the same premium for each grade. Roll hunters still pull MS65 and occasional MS66 examples from original-bag rolls released into northern-tier Federal Reserve districts. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
