About this coinHistory

Denver's 2019 Frank Church-River of No Return mintage came in at 226,800,000 pieces, the highest D-mint production of the year and the closing release of the 2019 ATB cycle. The Denver figure runs 22 percent above Philadelphia for the design, restoring the late-series default pattern of D-mint-heavier output after three consecutive 2019 designs where the eastern mint led. Phebe Hemphill's reverse shows a rafter navigating the Salmon River with mountains behind and whitewater texture in the lower foreground. The wilderness area in central Idaho covers more than 2.4 million acres and is one of the largest contiguous wilderness designations in the lower 48. The D mintmark sits just right of Washington's queue on the obverse, in standard ATB position.

Production characteristics at Denver during the 2019 cycle render the water texture slightly fuller than Philadelphia. The whitewater immediately around the raft comes up crisper on D-mint examples in side-by-side comparison, while the figure and the paddle stroke render comparably. Die-wear sequence on the design runs the whitewater first, then the figure, then the mountain ridges; coins with soft water but a sharp figure are typically middle die state and grade MS65 or low MS66. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC handle the slabbed market for premium-grade submissions. The clad composition is the standard 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core at 5.67 grams.

The 2019-D Frank Church-River of No Return is a Regular classification entry, common raw and through MS66 and turning into a condition rarity at MS68. The 2019-W release for the same design, 2 million pieces from the first West Point circulating coinage in U.S. history, sits in a separate catalog tier. Population reports show the D-mint slightly more available at MS67 than Philadelphia, the typical late-series pattern. Registry collectors building the 56-coin clad set pair the P and D 2019 issues as a single tier. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
