About this coinHistory

Denver's 2019 San Antonio Missions mintage came in at 177,200,000 pieces, lower than the Philadelphia output of 233,400,000 for the design and the third consecutive 2019 release where the D-mint trailed the P-mint by a meaningful margin. The pattern across American Memorial, War in the Pacific, and San Antonio Missions runs contrary to the late-series default of D-mint-heavier production. Chris Costello's reverse shows the facade of Mission San Jose with its bell tower, the carved stone arch over the main entrance, and the cross at the tower's peak. The Texas park preserves four Spanish colonial missions along the San Antonio River and was added to the National Park System in 1978. The D mintmark sits in standard ATB position just right of Washington's queue.

Production characteristics at Denver during the 2019 cycle render the architectural detail slightly fuller than Philadelphia. The bell arches and the carved entrance stonework come up crisper on D-mint examples in side-by-side comparison, while the cross and the upper-tower lines render comparably. Die-wear sequence on the design runs the bell arches first, then the carved stonework, then the cross silhouette; coins with sharp arches but soft entrance carving are middle die state and almost always grade MS66. The clad composition is the standard 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core at 5.67 grams. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC handle the slabbed market for the issue.

The 2019-D San Antonio Missions is a Regular classification entry, common raw and through MS66 and turning into a condition rarity at MS68 because the dense stonework relief punishes die wear. The 2019-W release for the same design, 2 million pieces from the first West Point circulating coinage in U.S. history, sits in a separate catalog tier. Population reports show the D-mint slightly less available than Philadelphia at MS66 and roughly equivalent at MS67. Registry collectors building the 56-coin clad set pair the P and D 2019 San Antonio Missions as a single tier. For the broader story of the ATB program and the series' design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
