About this coinHistory

The 2020-W American Samoa quarter continues the West Point circulation experiment that began the year before, but with an added feature that defines the 2020-W subset, namely the V75 privy mark. V75 stands for Victory 75, marking the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in 1945. The privy appears as a small V75 symbol on the obverse to the right of Washington's head, a detail unique to the 2020 W-mint releases. Richard Masters designed the reverse, which depicts a Samoan fruit bat mother nursing her pup, the only U.S. coin to portray a bat. The W mintmark sits in its standard position above Washington's head; both the W and the V75 privy must be present to authenticate the coin.

The Mint released approximately two million American Samoa W-mint V75 Privy pieces into Federal Reserve coin shipments in 2020, again without public announcement and again across all five reverse designs of the year. The combination of the W mintmark and the V75 privy gives the coin two distinct identifying features, which simplifies authentication considerably. Counterfeit concern is essentially nil for modern circulating coinage with two reliable diagnostics at the surface; the more practical risk is a privy-free 2020 W-mint coin, which would indicate either an error or a misattribution rather than counterfeiting. Mint State examples are routinely certified at PCGS and NGC, with populations heaviest in MS65 through MS67. Circulation-pulled raw coins remain available in flips at the lower end of the market.

The coin holds Semi-Key status in the ATB series with the same scarcity profile as its 2019-W predecessors, namely heavy collector pull-out rather than low absolute production. The WWII anniversary tie-in gives the 2020-W subset a thematic anchor that the 2019-W issues lack, which has supported modest premium retention in the years since release. Pricing remains stable in mid-Mint State and firms in MS67 and above. The typical acquisition target is a certified example as part of a complete 2020-W five-piece run, or a raw uncirculated coin for set-builders focused on date completion rather than grade. For the broader story of the West Point experiment and the ATB program's design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
