About this coinHistory

The 2020-W Salt River Bay quarter is the third of the year's five W-mint releases and the only Washington quarter honoring a U.S. Virgin Islands site. Richard Masters designed the reverse, which shows a mangrove tree at the boundary of forest and sea at Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve on St. Croix, with the surrounding tidal estuary in the background. Two features on the obverse define the 2020 W-mint issues: the W mintmark above Washington's head, and the V75 privy mark to the right of Washington commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Both must be present on a genuine 2020-W coin.

The U.S. Mint distributed approximately two million Salt River Bay W-mint V75 Privy pieces through Federal Reserve coin shipments in 2020, the same model used for the four other 2020 W-mint designs. The release happened without prior announcement, and collectors identified the V75 privy through pocket change and roll searching within weeks of the spring 2020 launch. Authentication relies on confirming both diagnostics on the obverse, which makes counterfeiting impractical at current premium levels. The bigger collector worry is condition rather than authenticity; the V75 privy is small and sits in a high-relief area where contact marks tend to land first. PCGS and NGC populations cluster in MS65 through MS67, with thinner counts at MS68 where the privy field needs to be clean.

The coin holds Semi-Key status in the ATB series, with the now-familiar W-mint scarcity profile of two million pieces produced but most pulled from circulation quickly by collectors. The WWII anniversary tie-in gives the 2020-W subset a thematic identity beyond simple mintmark distinction, and that identity has supported steady demand since release. Pricing is firm in mid-Mint State and rises noticeably in MS67 and above. The standard collector path is a certified mid-grade example to complete the 2020-W five-piece run, with the privy area's clean preservation being the practical grade-versus-price decision point. For the broader story of the West Point experiment and the ATB program's design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
