About this coinHistory

Maria Adelina Isabel Emilia Otero-Warren (1881-1965), known as Nina, led the New Mexico chapter of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage and chaired the state ratification campaign that helped secure passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. In 1922, she became the first Hispanic woman to seek a major-party nomination for the United States House of Representatives, running on the Republican ticket from New Mexico. Otero-Warren also served as Santa Fe County superintendent of schools and worked extensively on Spanish-language and Indigenous education reform across the state. The Philadelphia strike of her 2022 American Women Quarter carries a mintage of 225,000,000 pieces, the lowest 2022-P mintage in the program and a useful figure for collectors comparing production across the five honorees.

The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Chris Costello and sculpted by United States Mint medallic artist Craig A. Campbell, depicts Otero-Warren in profile alongside three Yucca flowers, the official state flower of New Mexico, with the bilingual inscription VOTO PARA LA MUJER (Vote for Women). The choice to render the slogan in Spanish acknowledges the bilingual reality of New Mexico's suffrage movement and Otero-Warren's own outreach work. The obverse retains Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait, paired with the standard clad specifications at 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel over a copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, and a reeded edge.

The lower Philadelphia mintage compared with other 2022-P American Women issues gives this coin slightly stronger collector attention in original-roll form, particularly among collectors who track the relative scarcity of each honoree across the program. Mint State examples graded MS66 and finer by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), particularly with full Yucca-petal detail, draw modest premiums in registry circles. For program scope and design history, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
