About this coinHistory

Wilma Mankiller (1945-2010) became the first woman elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1985, leading the tribe through a decade of growth in health services, education, and self-governance until 1995. A grassroots organizer who grew up in Oklahoma and later in San Francisco during the federal relocation era, she returned to her ancestral lands and rebuilt the Bell community water system as an early proof that Cherokee citizens could direct their own development. President Bill Clinton awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. The Philadelphia issue of her 2022 American Women Quarter carries a mintage of 310,000,000 pieces, the highest figure for any 2022-P quarter in the program and a reflection of strong regional demand for circulating change as commerce continued recovering across the eastern United States.

The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by United States Mint medallic artist Phebe Hemphill, shows Mankiller with arms folded across her chest, her hair carried by the wind in a posture meant to convey quiet confidence rather than ceremony. The inscription "Cherokee Nation" appears in Cherokee syllabary along with a seven-pointed star and a single feather. The obverse uses Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait, originally submitted for the bicentennial quarter competition and rejected by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon before finally being adopted for the American Women Quarters Program. Specifications follow the standard clad format at 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, with a reeded edge.

Circulated examples remain common at face value, but Mint State survivors graded MS66 and finer by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) carry modest premiums when struck with full hair detail and clean fields free of the bag marks typical of high-volume Philadelphia output. Roll collectors often target original bank-wrapped rolls pulled near release date. For broader program history and the legislative origins of the American Women series, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
