About this coinHistory

Sally Ride launched aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-7 on June 18, 1983, becoming the first American woman in space at age 32. A physicist by training, she later co-founded Sally Ride Science to push girls into STEM education, work that continued until her death in 2012. The 2022 Philadelphia clad quarter honoring Ride entered production as the second issue of the American Women Quarters Program, with a final mintage of 275,200,000 pieces. The release came alongside Maya Angelou's quarter in the rolling 2022 launch, and the Philadelphia run trailed Denver's 278,000,000 by a narrow margin. The coin entered circulation through Federal Reserve channels in spring 2022, and pocket-change examples in the eastern United States most often carry the P mintmark.

The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Elana Hagler and sculpted by US Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill, shows Ride in profile aboard Challenger, looking through the Space Shuttle's flight deck window at Earth below. The image draws from Ride's own description of the view from orbit. The obverse uses Laura Gardin Fraser's Washington portrait, a 1932 sculpt rejected for the original Washington quarter by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and revived ninety years later for the American Women program. Specifications follow the standard clad quarter: 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel clad to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.3 millimeters in diameter, with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date on the obverse. Authentication on a Philadelphia strike rests on mintmark placement, the satin business strike finish, and detail in the window framing and Earth's curvature on the reverse.

Mint state Philadelphia Ride quarters circulate freely at MS65 and MS66, with MS67 examples drawing modest premiums through Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Early-release holders carry their own following. For full program context, see the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
