San Francisco struck approximately 800,000 Patsy Takemoto Mink quarters in the Not Intended for Circulation format, distributed through Mint uncirculated set products. Mink (1927-2002) was the first Asian American woman in Congress and the co-author of Title IX, the landmark 1972 law prohibiting sex discrimination in federally funded education. After her death, the law was renamed in her honor. The S-mint coin carries the lei and Congressional setting reverse.
About Patsy Takemoto Mink
Mink's legislative career spanned two distinct chapters. She first served in Congress from 1965 to 1977, during which she co-authored Title IX, opposed the Vietnam War on the House floor, and championed early childhood education funding. After leaving Congress, she served as assistant secretary of state for oceans and international environmental and scientific affairs under President Carter. She won election to the Honolulu City Council in 1983 and returned to Congress in 1990, where she continued to serve until her death on September 28, 2002. Mink passed away just weeks before winning her final re-election; Hawaii voters, already aware of her passing, gave her a posthumous victory. Her career demonstrated that barriers, once broken, tend to stay broken: the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus she helped inspire now counts dozens of members.
