About this coinHistory

The 2024 Zitkala-Sa quarter struck at San Francisco in uncirculated finish, with a reported mintage of 800,000, falls into the category collectors call NIFC, or Not Intended For Circulation. The United States Mint produced these coins for direct sale in two-roll and bag products rather than for release through Federal Reserve channels. Zitkala-Sa, born Gertrude Simmons Bonnin in 1876, used her career as a writer, musician, and political activist to advance Native American civil rights. Her 1913 collaboration "The Sun Dance Opera" was the first opera composed by a Native American, and her 1926 founding of the National Council of American Indians established a national advocacy organization that worked toward citizenship and voting rights for Indigenous communities. The NIFC format brings her honoring quarter to collectors in a finish distinct from both business strikes and proofs.

Benjamin Sowards designed the reverse through the Artistic Infusion Program, depicting Zitkala-Sa in traditional Dakota regalia with cultural symbols. Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait carries the obverse. Composition matches the circulating clad coin at 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel bonded over a copper core, weight 5.67 grams, diameter 24.3 millimeters, edge reeded. Authentication of a San Francisco NIFC piece relies on several markers. Confirm the S mintmark on the obverse. Verify the satin or matte uncirculated finish, which differs from the brilliant cartwheel luster of Philadelphia and Denver business strikes and from the mirrored fields of proof issues. Inspect the strike completeness on the regalia details, since these dies typically produce fully struck examples.

Submitting an S NIFC for grading at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) requires the holder to recognize the unique finish, with top examples earning MS69 and MS70 designations that carry premium bids in registry competition. Aftermarket pricing reflects both the limited distribution and the collector base built around the AWQP run. Production details and program background appear on the Washington Quarters (American Women) series history.
