Pauli Murray's life work moved across law, theology, and literature with a coherence that few of her contemporaries matched. From her 1944 Howard Law graduation through her 1977 ordination in the Episcopal Church, she pressed legal and theological institutions toward a more honest reckoning with the intersection of race and sex. Murray's poetry collection "her poetry collections" and her family memoir "Proud Shoes" are part of the same project as her legal scholarship, and the 2024 quarter carries an inscription from her writing that touches on that public witness.
