The 1974-D quarter was struck at Denver to 353,160,300 pieces, the heaviest Denver Washington mintage of the pre-Bicentennial period and roughly half the Philadelphia output for the year. The combined 1974 production at both mints exceeded 1.15 billion coins, the result of a deliberate push to build inventory ahead of the 1975-1976 Bicentennial program with its drum-and-torch reverse: no 1975-dated quarters were scheduled, so the 1974 dies ran heavy on both coasts to maintain commerce supply through the dual-dated transition. The D mintmark sits at the right side of Washington's hair queue on the obverse, in the post-1968 position; any 1974-D with a reverse mintmark is mechanically impossible and indicates a counterfeit or altered host coin.

Strike quality on the issue is the routine Denver clad story of weakness at the centers. Look for full hair detail above Washington's ear and crisp definition on the eagle's breast and leg feathers; the secondary diagnostic is the tail-feather and arrow definition on the reverse, where soft strikes leave the area mushy under five-to-ten-power magnification. The 1974-D is a deep common-date entry in the modern catalog. The site classifies it Regular, and the classification is honest: date-set builders fill the slot in MS64 or MS65 for very little money, and certified MS66 examples remain affordable. The condition story tightens at MS67, where the combination of Denver strike softness and the bag-mark accumulation of a 353-million-coin production thins the population enough to support meaningful registry-set premiums. Original 1974 mint sets remain the practical hunting ground for upgrade candidates, with bulk-stored coins occasionally producing the luster preservation that random rolls almost never deliver.
