1976 Bicentennial, Clad

The 1976 Philadelphia Bicentennial quarter is one of the two clad business-strike pieces from the 200th-anniversary issue that replaced the Flanagan eagle reverse for 1975 and 1976 with Jack L. Ahr's Colonial drummer, torch, and ring of thirteen stars. Philadelphia struck 809,784,016 of the clad business strikes, the heaviest Philadelphia quarter mintage to that point and a figure produced in part because the mint elected to skip a 1975 date entirely. All quarters dated 1975 in calendar terms received the dual date 1776-1976; no 1975-only Washington quarter exists. The dual-dated production continued through calendar 1976 at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Philadelphia quarters of the issue carry no mintmark, consistent with every Philadelphia Washington through 1979.

The most important authentication step for the date is composition verification. The clad business-strike weighs 5.67 grams against the 5.75 grams of the 40-percent silver companion issue, and the reddish copper line along the edge separates the clad coin from the uniformly silver edge profile of the 1976-S Silver. A kitchen scale and a careful edge inspection settle the question without ambiguity. Strike quality varies: the new Ahr drummer reverse with its detailed drum head and torch shows softness on a meaningful share of business-strike examples, with the drum's snare lines and the drummer's hand definition the first zones to lose detail under die wear. No major doubled-die obverses or repunched-date varieties for 1976-P have been formally attributed by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, though minor doubling on the dual date occasionally surfaces on cherrypicked rolls.

The 1976 clad Philadelphia is a common Regular issue despite carrying the most-loved single-year reverse in the modern series. Acquisition at MS64 or MS65 is essentially free with any roll, and certified MS66 examples remain inexpensive. The condition story tightens at MS67 because the combination of softer strikes typical for the Ahr reverse and the bag-mark accumulation of an 800-million-coin production thins the high-grade population sharply, and registry-set work commands meaningful premiums on luster-preserved examples. The Bicentennial set as a three-coin grouping with the half dollar and Eisenhower dollar remains a popular entry-level holding and a frequent introduction to clad-era collecting.
