1976-D Bicentennial, Clad

The 1976-D Bicentennial quarter is the Denver clad business-strike of the 200th-anniversary issue, produced to 860,118,839 pieces and the single largest Denver mintage in the Washington series. It carries the Jack L. Ahr reverse of a Colonial drummer, a torch, and a ring of thirteen stars representing the original colonies, replacing the Flanagan eagle that ran from 1932 forward and would return in 1977. The dual date 1776-1976 appears on the obverse below Washington's truncation; no 1975-dated Washington quarters exist because the mint shifted to dual-dated production for the full two-year program. The D mintmark sits at the right side of Washington's hair queue on the obverse, in the post-1968 position, and any 1976-D with a reverse mintmark is mechanically impossible.

Composition verification is the primary authentication step for the date. The clad business-strike weighs 5.67 grams against the 5.75 grams of the 40-percent silver companion piece, and the reddish copper line at the edge distinguishes the clad coin from the uniformly silver edge profile of the 1976-S Silver. A kitchen scale and an edge inspection settle the question without ambiguity. Strike quality on the Denver business-strike ranges from average to soft, with the drummer's hand, the snare lines on the drum, and the torch's flame definition the first zones to lose detail under die wear. The eagle is absent on this reverse, so the routine Washington check on breast feathers and tail definition does not apply: substitute the drum and torch zones as the diagnostic for strike quality. No major doubled-die obverses or repunched-mintmark varieties have been formally attributed to 1976-D by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company.

The 1976-D clad is a common Regular issue in the modern catalog. Acquisition at MS64 or MS65 is essentially free with any roll, and certified MS66 examples remain inexpensive. The condition story tightens hard at MS67 because the combination of softer strikes typical for the Ahr reverse and bag-mark accumulation across an 860-million-coin production leaves the high-grade population thin. Original Bicentennial mint sets remain the practical hunting ground for upgrade candidates, and modern submissions of bulk-stored coins continue to add MS67 examples to the population reports. MS68 stays exceptionally thin and carries real money when it surfaces in major auctions.
