The 1976-S Silver Bicentennial quarter is the 40-percent silver-clad business-strike companion to the standard cupronickel issues, produced at San Francisco to 7,059,099 pieces and distributed exclusively in the three-coin silver Uncirculated Set alongside the matching 40-percent silver Bicentennial half dollar and Eisenhower dollar. The mintage figure tracks the set's production run rather than a circulation distribution: every example originated in a sealed government holder, and unmolested original-issue examples remain common in the market. The composition is 40-percent silver and 60-percent copper bonded as a silver-clad sandwich rather than the homogenous 90-percent silver of the pre-1965 era, with .074 troy ounces of actual silver weight and a 5.75-gram total weight against the 5.67 grams of the standard clad business strike.

Composition verification is the central authentication step. The clad versus silver question on a 1976 quarter resolves with a kitchen scale (5.67 g clad versus 5.75 g silver) and an edge inspection: the clad business-strike shows the reddish copper line typical of cupronickel-over-copper construction, while the silver-clad shows a uniformly silver-toned edge with no copper line. Either check alone settles the question, and using both together leaves no room for ambiguity. The S mintmark sits at the right side of Washington's hair queue on the obverse, in the post-1968 position; San Francisco struck only the silver-clad business and proof Bicentennial quarters, not the circulating cupronickel issue. The Jack L. Ahr drummer reverse with its torch and thirteen stars appears on every Bicentennial quarter regardless of composition. No major doubled-die obverses or repunched-mintmark varieties have been formally attributed to the date by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company.

The 1976-S Silver is a Regular issue in the modern catalog despite the limited 7-million distribution figure, because the set survived intact in collector hands and certified MS67 and MS68 examples remain readily available at modest prices. The condition story matters at MS68+ and MS69, where the population thins meaningfully and pristine luster-preserved coins command real premiums for registry-set work. The companion three-coin silver set itself remains a popular type-collecting target, and intact original holders carry their own modest premium over broken-out singles.
