The 1980 proof issue therefore reads as Type 2 character throughout, with a clear, well-cut S at the right side of Washington's hair queue on the obverse. No Type 1 / Type 2 mintmark variety has been attributed to the date by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, because the punch transition that produced the 1979 and 1981 varieties did not recur. The reverse continues the restored John Flanagan heraldic eagle paired with the Houdon-derived Washington portrait, with the JF initials visible at the truncation of the neck. Composition is the standard cupronickel clad sandwich at 5.67 grams.
