The 1981-S Type 1 proof quarter is the early-year half of the second major San Francisco mintmark-punch transition of the modern proof era. The Type 2 S punch introduced midway through the 1979 production run had itself degraded by the start of 1981, with the loops filling and the letter form rounding into a soft, blob-shaped outline now catalogued as 1981-S Type 1. Midway through the year the Mint replaced that worn punch with a sharply cut flat-top S, and the later strikes from the new punch carry the Type 2 attribution. The reverse continues the John Flanagan heraldic eagle paired with the Washington portrait by Flanagan on the obverse and the JF initials at the truncation of the neck. Composition is the standard cupronickel clad sandwich at 5.67 grams, with the reddish copper edge line visible on the rim.

The combined 1981-S proof mintage stands at 4,063,083 sets, split between Type 1 and Type 2 with the Type 1 representing the substantial majority share. Authentication on this issue runs through the mintmark under 5x to 10x magnification: a rounded, filled S with the loops closed or nearly closed reads as Type 1. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, both attribute the Type 1 and Type 2 varieties on the holder, and unattributed raw material from intact 1981 proof sets can sometimes be cherrypicked when the seller has not separated the two. The strike standard is the strong proof finish typical of early-1980s San Francisco, with Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, common across early die impressions and Deep Cameo specimens at Proof 69 available at modest price.
