About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck the 2026 California American Innovation Dollar honoring Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, in a portrait set against the oak-covered rolling hills of northern California where Jobs lived and worked. California entered the Union on September 9, 1850, which fixes its place in the program's ratification-order chronology between Wisconsin (also 2026) and Minnesota (later in 2026). Reverse design credit goes to Artistic Infusion Program artist Elana Hagler, with sculpting by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill. Hemphill is also the sculptor of record for the program's common Statue of Liberty obverse, so the 2026 California coin is the unusual case of one Mint artist shaping both faces. The reverse legend MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL is drawn from a 1995 Jobs interview, later reused as the title of a 2023 Apple-published anthology of his writings and addresses curated by his archivist Leslie Berlin.

The Philadelphia issue ships only through the U.S. Mint catalog in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags. There is no general circulation release, which means almost every surviving 2026-P will pass directly from a Mint roll into a collector holder. Practical grade range starts at MS65 or MS66 and climbs from there; truly circulated examples are conspicuous rather than typical. Strike-quality watchpoints center on the Jobs portrait: the eyeglass frame at the bridge of the nose, the line where the figure meets the foliage behind, and the lettering depth of the MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL inscription arcing along the lower rim. The 2026 obverse also carries a one-year Semiquincentennial privy mark, a Liberty Bell with the inscription 250 alongside the standard stylized gear introduced in 2019.

For set builders, the 2026-P mintage has not yet been reported and will be published with the annual production report after the close of calendar 2026. The badge stays Regular pending that figure: original Mint rolls are the natural entry point, and MS68 in a major grading service holder is the realistic ceiling. The Jobs subject may pull crossover demand from collectors of Apple memorabilia and Silicon Valley history who would otherwise sit outside the modern dollar audience, the genuine variable worth watching more than the eventual mintage.
