2026-P Minnesota

The 2026-P Minnesota American Innovation Dollar is the Philadelphia striking of the design honoring mobile refrigeration, an Upper Midwest innovation rooted in Hallock, Minnesota, where Frederick McKinley Jones developed the first practical transport refrigeration unit for trucks. Jones co-founded the U.S. Thermo Control Company, later Thermo King, in 1938 and received the patent for that unit in 1940; the technology went on to refrigerate field hospitals and military supply chains during World War II and reshape American grocery and pharmaceutical distribution after. The reverse, designed by Beth Zaiken of the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Medallic Artist Joseph V. Noorigian, depicts a 1940s-era truck with an early front-mounted refrigeration unit, icons along the cargo box standing in for the temperature-sensitive goods made transportable. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, MINNESOTA, and MOBILE REFRIGERATION. This is Zaiken's second Innovation Dollar, following the 2024 Illinois steel-plow reverse.

Strike inspection on the Philadelphia issue centers on the truck-cab silhouette and the housing of the front-mounted refrigeration unit, where the heaviest line work converges and flat die wear shows up first. On a sharp 2026-P the cab outline, wheel arches, and side icons should each read as crisp boundaries; on a weaker strike the icons soften into approximate shapes and the cab flattens into the field. The 2026 obverse carries a Liberty Bell privy mark with the inscription 250 alongside the program's stylized gear privy mark, marking the U.S. Semiquincentennial. Edge lettering reads YEAR + MINTMARK + E PLURIBUS UNUM. Manganese-brass clad fingerprints easily, so original-packaged rolls and bags trade at a premium over loose coins.

For set builders, the 2026-P pairs with the 2026-D and the two San Francisco proof formats to complete the four-coin Minnesota run. Final mintage will publish through the U.S. Mint's annual production report; rolls and bags ship direct from the Mint catalog rather than through bank channels.
