Philadelphia struck the 2026 Wisconsin American Innovation Dollar as the second 2026 release in the four-state cycle, tied to Wisconsin's May 29, 1848 admission as the thirtieth state. Per-design mintages were not yet published at writing; circulation rolls and bags went on sale April 7, 2026 at a ten-unit-per-household ordering cap. The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program designer Paul Romano and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw, is a stylized aerial view of the Cray-1 supercomputer with the cabinet shape worked into the silhouette of a C, doing double duty for "Cray" and "computer." Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WISCONSIN, and CRAY-1 SUPERCOMPUTER. The 2026 obverse retains the Justin Kunz Statue of Liberty sculpted by Phebe Hemphill and adds a one-year Liberty Bell privy inscribed 250 for the Semiquincentennial.
The Cray-1 belongs to Wisconsin numismatically because Cray Research built it in Chippewa Falls. Seymour Cray founded the company in 1972 and shipped the first unit to Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1976 at roughly 160 megaflops, fast enough to hold the world's-fastest commercial computer title through 1982. The cabinet's curve was a packaging answer to signal-path length, with the wrapped bench at the base concealing the power supplies. Inspection on the Philadelphia issue follows the cabinet curve, the board-slot grid inside the C-arc, and the rim text. Philadelphia 2026 dies delivered slightly brighter cartwheel luster than the Denver counterparts on early strikes, a difference that reads under a single point light source rather than diffuse light.
The 2026-P is a common-date for set assembly with no per-design figure published yet. It trades at modest premiums over face inside original Philadelphia rolls, certifies cheaply at MS66 and MS67, and narrows at the MS68 and MS68+ tier where value lives in condition rather than mintage. Recommended raw inside an original Philadelphia roll for date-set work and certified MS68 or higher for registry builders working the program toward its scheduled 2032 close. The one-year Liberty Bell 250 privy on the obverse gives the 2026 Wisconsin coin a second collecting axis independent of the Cray-1 reverse. For the state-by-state rotation and program scope, see the American Innovation Dollar series history.
