About this coinHistory

The 2004-P Keelboat Jefferson nickel is the second design of the Westward Journey Nickel Series, showing the 55-foot keelboat that Lewis and Clark used for part of their expedition up the Missouri River. The reverse design by Al Maletsky depicts the keelboat with billowing sails under the inscription "Lewis & Clark 1804." Philadelphia struck 344,880,000 coins with this reverse.

The keelboat was the primary vessel of the expedition's first phase and carried the Corps of Discovery up the Missouri from St. Louis in the spring of 1804. When the river became too shallow for the large craft, Lewis and Clark transferred to smaller canoes for the remainder of the journey. The keelboat design therefore represents the expedition's launching phase before the transfer to smaller canoes.

The 2004-P Keelboat is abundant in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Collectors building complete Westward Journey sets acquire the coin as the second of the four Westward Journey designs (Peace Medal 2004, Keelboat 2004, Bison 2005, Western Waters 2005).
