The 2004-P Peace Medal Jefferson nickel is the first of the Westward Journey Nickel Series, a four-coin commemorative program celebrating the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The reverse features a version of the Indian Peace Medal that Lewis and Clark presented to Native American leaders during their expedition, designed by Norman E. Nemeth. The medal shows a handshake between a Native American and an American counterpart, with crossed tomahawk and peace pipe above and the words LOUISIANA PURCHASE 1803.
The obverse continued to show Felix Schlag's portrait of Jefferson, though the Westward Journey program would modify the obverse portrait for 2005 and 2006. Philadelphia struck 361,440,000 coins with the Peace Medal reverse, making it a common issue available in every grade.
The Peace Medal reverse was the first significant modification to the Jefferson nickel reverse since the coin's 1938 introduction. For 66 years, the Monticello reverse had been the only image on the back of the nickel, and the change to the Peace Medal design was historically significant as the first of multiple reverse design changes that would affect the series over the following years.
Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets acquire the 2004-P Peace Medal as a required entry for the Westward Journey sub-series. The coin is abundant in all grades and readily available in Mint State.
